Tesla Cybertruck first impressions

Tesla unveiled the Cybertruck and Wow this is going to divide everyone in so many ways. If Tesla wasn’t controversial enough for you it’s definitely gonna be now.

Tesla Cybertruck Top 10 Things You Need To Know.

  1. Power. The Cybertruck has three electric motors for the top-of-the-range model. The all-wheel-drive tri-motor Cybertruck will do 0 to 60 in less than 3 seconds. A dual motor or wheel drive model will do the same sprint in under 4.5 seconds, while the entry-level single motor with rear-wheel drive will take 6.5 seconds to go from 0 to 60.
  2. Range. Tesla says its tri-motor Cybertruck can manage 500 miles between charges. The mid specification dual motor model meanwhile lasts 300 miles but the entry-level rear-drive Cybertruck will only do 250 miles between electrical fill-ups.
  3. Design. The new Cybertruck is probably the most minimalist pickup ever created. Upfront there’s no grill. Just a blank space flanked by two headlights. While the bonnet flows without a change in an angle into the windscreen. And at the rear, there’s just a single high-level light bar. There are some traditional pickup truck design clues though. Just take a look at those rugged tires and chunky wheel arches.
  4. Bodywork. Tesla made the body of the Cybertruck which it calls its exoskeleton out of cold-rolled stainless steel. This helps to eliminate corrosion. It also makes it look like a modern successor to the DeLorean.
  5. Interior. Inside the angular design, the theme continues with geometric seatbacks and a flat shelf-like dashboard. Familiar to owners of pickup trucks will be the six-seat layout which includes a small jump seat in the front row. what’s less normal for a pickup is the massive 17-inch touchscreen and the oddly shaped steering wheel.
  6. Practicality. Tesla says the Cybertruck has 2830 liters of lockable cargo capacity. This includes the low bed, which Tesla calls “The Vault”, the frunk and even more storage in the sail pillars. These are the bits of bodywork behind the rear windows.
  7. Versatility. The Cybertruck has integrated 120-volt and 240-volt power points, turning it into a kind of mobile mini power station. It also features an onboard air compressor, making it ideal for camping trips or building sites.
  8. Suspension. Thanks to adaptive air suspension, a pretty high-tech trick on a truck, the Cybertruck can raise or lower itself by up to 4 inches. It’s also self-leveling, so you know it’ll adjust automatically to any load.
  9. Armour. If you expect to be driving through the dodgy parts of town, you needn’t worried. The Cybertruck will withstand a whack from a sledgehammer without denting the bodywork. Its windows will also resist bullets. Although Elon Musk’s demonstration of that didn’t quite go according to plan.
  10. Tesla Cybertruck Price. The US will be Cybertruck’s main market. The price of it will start from just under $40,000 when it goes on sale in 2021 rising to around $70,000 for a top specification tri-motor version. That puts it squarely up against massive sellers like the Ford f-150 and Ram 1500.

More Thought on The Cybertruck Design

They started out this event full force by saying “We’re not trying to make a truck that looks like everybody else’s.” Tesla Cybertruck’s design is very function over form. This is different and unique to see from Tesla because their cars have always been focused on being sexy and aesthetically, pleasing and aerodynamic, and very good-looking. This feels like the complete opposite direction where they just focus on durability, performance.

  • The vault length is 6.5 ft
  • Towing capability is over 14,000 pounds
  • Maxed out the range is over 500 miles;
  • Starting price is $39,900 – 10 grand lower than we originally thought it was going to be;

The Tesla Cybertruck sits six people. The interior is borrowing a lot from the previous generation Teslas. It has the Tesla Roadster steering wheel. The display is a 17-inch screen landscape, which makes it a little bit larger than the Tesla Model 3 screen which is a 15-inch display.

Cybertruck Interior

The Tesla Cybertruck design is what they described as an exoskeleton. It’s a stainless-steel body which is why you’re only seeing it in one color. And again function over form.

In the demo, they slammed a standard door with a sledgehammer and they showed how it dented and how it scraped. They also slammed the Cybertruck with the sledgehammer – no scratches, no dents, no nothing. This truck is made to be durable way more durable than average pickup trucks or average cars. You still have a really large bed in the back for storing stuff.

A lot of people hate the design. They absolutely despise the fact that it just looks like a giant trapezoid/triangle. It just looks like a prototype. The Cybertruck looks like it shouldn’t be a production model. It makes a lot of sense why they gave it the Mad Max treatment at this event and they treated the marketing all differently. They didn’t just call it “Tesla Pickup” because they couldn’t do that. This thing clearly looks way different than your average pickup. The Tesla Cybertruck looks like it belongs on Mars more than it does on Earth.

Very boxy, very sharp edges, it almost looks like a completely different company from the company that gave you the Roadster, or the Model 3, the Model S. None of these cars look like they’re even remotely in the same family as the Cybertruck.

What The Tesla Cybertruck does functionally is quite amazing, compared to what other pickup trucks offer. The fact that you can charge this from home or at supercharging stations, supports over 250 kilowatt-hours this could end up being a success.

How much is the Tesla Cybertruck?

There are three tiers that they’re currently advertising:

  • A Rear-wheel drive single motor design that’s the one that starts at $39,900.
    • It can go 0 to 60 in 6.5 seconds. Still really fast but for Tesla kind of average, actually probably one of their slowest vehicles;
  • A Dual Motor option which is an all-wheel-drive, much better for traction for $49,900
    • It can do 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds which for a pickup truck is pretty insane.;
  • Tri-Motor – two in the back one in the front for $69,900
    • It can do 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds

You can actually reserve one right now (11.21.2019) for $100 and it’s fully refundable. Production is expected to begin late 2021 so we still got a couple of years before you actually see this weird-looking truck out on the freeway. The triple motor option is not going into production until the end of 2022. So this car is definitely coming from the future.

The Tesla Cybertruck Bed Storage

The Tesla Cybertruck has a tailgate that comes all the way to the ground. Tesla made an ATV called Cyberquad that you can drive right up to the top and of course it has 220 volts charging on the back so you can actually charge the ATV while it’s in the bed of the truck. The Cybertruck has adaptive air suspension so it will adapt depending on the payload. It has a built-in air compressor so if you want to fill up tires or do whatever you need to do with an air compressor you have that option. That’s standard so you get that even on that $40,000 truck.

The pickup truck market is an enormous one in the United States and I think even if this is a niche market, even if this is a small piece of it, the Cybertruck could still end up selling really really well because it’s a big demographic. Time will tell, of course, no one’s really gonna know until this thing actually starts delivering.
